This is an ongoing problem with many P12 Primera's and it looks like a nice german chap may have discovered the faulty component.

Before we dive into the problem and fix please be aware that your DVD/Screen setup is incredibly expensive (Over £2000 from the dealer) so do not attempt to do this yourself unless you are very competant. If you are unsure then print this information and supply it to an auto electrician.

This is also by no means a guaranteed fix but its the best we know about at this point in time!

The Problem occurs mostly when the car is cold, When warmed up the screen will usually come back to life and work ok. Sometimes by warming up the DVD unit you will get the same results.

The fault lies with a small transistor which is housed next to 3 coils. This gets covered with the glue from the coils which gets very hard when cold and presumably causes the transistor to become detached from the board. Once heate up the glue becomes soft and the transistor makes contact with the board.

The following info and pictures are a direct translation from the German chap who discovered the problem so its not very straight forward but does give you an idea.

Hello dear Nissan forum municipality!

I am an independent electronics engineer and had yesterday a Nissan-Primera-P12 gotten with the problem discussed here! Since this Thread helped me crucially and I could successfully repair Nissan, I would like to leave you at my experiences sharings:

Starting situation:

Display apparently without function, when ignition lasted it on approx. 5 seconds, until the background lighting turned on, display contents remained however black.

By a contribution in the Thread I that it probably is because of the DVD drive assembly, recognized here the car have navigation. Symptoms for it are:

No operation possible, no music, except which manipulation of the rear window heater functions. In addition to me that the DVD computer was “dead”, thus no CD or DVD was noticeable to draw in wanted. In the starting situation no DVD was in the computer. Now after the repair I that one can on hear the computer without DVD when ignition, know like also the CD drive assembly.

Now good, I have myself thus first times on the DVD drive assembly concentrated and with its development employed me, which like you do not know without larger expenditure is possible. I have it however also without guidance get, since these Nissan very well lets itself screw. One needs to arm itself in the reason only with a cross screwdriver and already geht´s loosely. : -)

After successful development I divided this first times as far as possible into its individual parts, in order to examine the plate on visible damage. Nothing obvious found. I thus the computer Main board with the additional voltage regulator plate also in the car taken, attached and the operating voltages controls. 12 V arrive. On the voltage supply plate is an outside potential transformer inform a 5-pin construction unit, whatever spent good 9 V. Then I based on the existing Elkos and had to state that anywhere 5 V usual for processors did not fit. On the Main board also anywhere 5 V were not to be measured, thus were clear for me that must be here somewhat putrid. Now still another 5-pin construction unit is in a metal small box on the voltage supply plate (I made many pictures, in addition I come later). There the 12Volt was clean-led, it came however no further tensions raus. Thus I assumed the error here. Darauhin I expenditure-soldered and divided the complete box. That was no sugar licking, who sees the pictures and made already times something similar, will really know, what I mean.
After some back and forth me also the pin allocation of this DC DC converter was clear. In the small box a IC sits named BA9743, which in
“2-channel switching modulator CONTROLLER” is, for which I also a data sheet google owing to found. First measurements resulted in that this only no operating voltage it gets which me hopes reads that this, how also the two transistors, which are to be procured mostly with difficulty, is perhaps not broken. Now I had to divide the part still further, in order to be able to pursue the conductive strip for the operating voltage of the IC´s. Some construction units with a white mass stuck ungrateful way together, which lets itself solve however with hot-air easily. Fortunately it noticed to me that a small SMD transistor remained hanging on the mass. This was supposed the evil. By cold release places it could have itself solved!? I have thereupon the transistor again soldered, all other construction units again soldered and the entire DC DC converter without housings first times the plate soldered! A test in the car resulted in that again all functioned, whereupon I still made a few measurements and assembled the computer again completely.
Everything again built into the car, again tested and everything is good. : -)

I have approx. 30 highly soluble pictures made, intended for many here would be helpful!? Together however approx. 75 MT and I are not have anything to the high shop. Thus who has interest, can itself announce to me.

Also I would offer you gladly to repair your DVD computer economically if it is possible for me.

I unbuttoned 200 euros to the customer for the entire repair, with which this seemed also very happy, particularly since he already was at Nissan with the problem. Individual repair of a dispatched computer would be however clearly more favorable.

Here still the pin allocation of the metal box, which facilitates an examining of this much, stand for pin numbers on the plate:

1. Output 3,5V
2. Output 5,0V
3. GND
4. Power on 12V
5. Input 12V

Function condition is thus 12 V on pin 4 and 5, then 2 indicated the tensions must rauskommen from pin 1 and. These information I determined, because I could find no data sheet for the converter generally speaking. In order to test the computer, one needs to remove only the upper cover, puts 12 V on the large drawer Elko and puts additionally 12 V on the power on pin. Then one should hear kurzens a Surren of the load engine in the drive assembly! One should take or to insert be able then also the CD.

Additional Info:

The Unit is built by xanavi corp and they have provided extra details

There is a problem with your Navigation system installed in the European Nissan Primera P12.

Many Nissan Primera P12 owners are experiencing problems with a blank screen, especially in cold weather.

The problem has been tracked down to a surface mount transistor loosing contact with the circuit board.

The transistor is between 3 coils. A white glue is applied to the coils and also comes into contact with the transistor.

Either by poor soldering or vibration from the coils, the transistor becomes loose.

This board is inside a metal case and is marked:

HAZ 0043

ZSZ1898

This board  is soldered to another board marked:

Oop Xanavi Corp

JKZ 1012

Conclusion:

The fault lies with the transistor that is situated in between the 3 blue coils on a board within the DVD unit as in the picture. This will probably be covered in the white glue so this may need heating and removing to gain access. To gain access to the board you may only need to remove the front metal cover and not the complete cover. The transistor then needs to be checked for a poor joint and resoldered as required.

It has also been stated that wedging the transistor back to the board with a piece of plastic yields the same results but this is by no means a permanent fix but worth trying if you are unsure about using a soldering iron.
